The Kokomo Police Department, in conjunction with Indiana University Kokomo (IUK), will hold its first Youth Police Academy, beginning on June 20. The Academy, for student in grades 6, 7 and 8, will run for one week, daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at IUK, 2300 S. Lafountain Street.
Captain Kevin Summers of the Kokomo Police Department said the Youth Police Academy will serve multiple purposes.
“The Academy fits perfectly with our community policing efforts,” said Capt. Summers. “This will foster positive relationships between police department and the city’s youth. We know from experience that having these kinds of interactions pays dividends in the future. It is a great opportunity for youth learn about the police department.”
Participants will attend a mock police academy where they will learn about various aspects of law enforcement duties, through hands-on activities, role-plays, team building exercises, and field trips.
There is no cost to attend and lunch will be provided to participants, but class size is limited. A graduation banquet is set for June 24th at 6 p.m. at the IUK campus.
